Description: Purpose:The Alaska Ports feature class contains polygons for the major Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, and Chukchi Sea ports of the United States based on USACE 2010 Tonnage data. Ports significant to the NOAA surveying fleet and some U.S. Naval operations were also included. The polygons are organized by port groups where they cannot be logically separated and were created in order for a user to have a quick geographical reference. It is the author and project manager’s intent that the polygons will be utilized as overlays to better track how well NOAA's Navigation Services are serving these port areas. A few examples of studies that may include the polygon overlay are: congressional districts measurements; locating geographical port groups; percent of area with multibeam surveying coverage; ports relevant to commercial shellfish; areas where storm surge and weather forecasting are relevant; populations served; accident occurrences, and connections to rail transport – to name a few.Input data is from the following six sources: 1. Polygon data created with data from ENC DIRECT TO GIS (http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/csdl/ctp/encdirect_new.htm)Large Scale (Band 4/5) ENC boundaries - includes all area in M_COVR except the LNDARE coverage(NaturalFeaturesA/Land_Area) was erased from coverage area (MetadataA/Coverage_Area) at both the “Approach” and “Harbor” scales then joining both resultant polygons. The scale of the compilation ranged from 1:150000 (smallest scale of Band 4 ENC used) to 1:5000 (largest scale of Band 5 ENC used)2. Location of navigation channels, port infrastructure, precautionary, pilot, and depth areas and contour lines are from large scale RNC.kap files, NOAA_RNC MapService, and ENC Direct to GIS.Delineation boundaries include port infrastructure with an inland buffer of 500 meters for ports that have less than 10,000,000 tons of total mass cargo transported through the port per year and an inland buffer of 1000 meters for ports with greater than 10,000,000 tons of total mass cargo transported through the port per year.3. AIS data points found in http://www.marinecadastre.gov/ (which passage has the highest traffic for the most vessels) from May 2010 UTM zones 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.4. Coast Pilot (Textual description of each port and its features)5. Regional Navigation Managers:-LT. Timothy M. Smith, NOAA, National Ocean Service, Office of Coast Survey6. Survey and Legal LimitsNOAA Hydrographic Survey Priorities 2012 edition offshore depth limits for "navigationally significant" waters for the Alaska Coast is 20 fathoms (120 feet) along north slope Alaska, and 100 fathoms (600 feet) from Aleutians, west, south and east coast Alaska. The 50 fathom (300 feet) area from Pribilof Is. North was not used.(http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/hsd/NHSP.htm)Legal territorial waters of 3 NM or 12 NM where appropriateSoftware:ArcGIS 10.2 was used to process this dataDates:Date of compilation: June 3rd 2014 - August 31nd 2014
