description:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is mandated to acquire hydrographic data to support the safe navigation of maritime commerce throughout the substantial 3.4 million square nautical miles of the United States’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). While a complete hydrographic survey of the nation’s waters would maximize navigational safety, the large areal extent, coupled with constrained resources in time and money make this infeasible. NOAA recently developed a risk-based model of Hydrographic Health throughout the EEZ to systematically prioritize areas for survey. |
